Echinodorus Ros
Family: Alismataceae. Etymology: Echinodorus; see E. aschersoni-anus; 'Rosé': cultivar name, refers to the leaf coloration.
Distribution: No native distribution. Description: Medium-sized hybrid, about 10-25 cm tall, 20-40 cm wide in the aquarium. Emersed plants: leaf blade up to 45 cm petiolate, ovoid, up to 25 x 15 cm in size, dark olive green, juveniles reddish, occasionally with reddish spots. Apex obtuse aciculate; base round and short decurrent. Margin slightly undulate or flat. Submersed plants: petiole 5-20 cm long. Blade very narrow elliptic, 10-25 cm long, 2-8 cm wide, light to dark olive green in color, juveniles rosé-colored, with or without red spots; 5-7 veins. Pellucid lines mostly very long.
Inflorescences overtopping the plants, declínate, paniculate, with numerous flower whorls and many adventitious plants. Whorl with 12-16 about 3-cm large flowers. Pedicel 1.5-7 cm long. Bracts 1-2 cm long, aciculate. Sepals 8-10 mm long, 4-6 mm wide. Petals
- Two color forms of Echinodorus 'Rosé'.
1.8-2.0 cm wide, 1.5 cm long; 19-24 stamens. Nutlets fertile.
Culture: Echinodorus 'Rosé' is a decorative hybrid of which two color forms are kept. These are distinguishable by the presence or absence of conspicuous dark red spots which are spread over the entire submersed leaf blade. Strong specimens of E. 'Rosé' develop a loose spread out rosette. A medium to intense lighting, a free-standing location and a nutrient-rich substrate are recommended. Temperature range is 22-30 °C. Use—depending on the aquarium size—either in the middle or background. Multiplication should only be done through adventitious plants since sowing would lead to a division into different phenotypes.
Other: According to Hans Barth (1988), the breeder of this cultivar, E. 'Rosé' is a cross between E. horizontalis and E. horemanii "red" (color form of E. uruguayensis). A similar looking, but different plant is the cultivar Echinodorus 'Oriental' which is a mutation that appeared during tissue cultivation of Echinodorus 'Rosé'.
