Pedal Laceration

Pedal laceration is a fairly simple and common means of asexual reproduction. As the polyp slowly moves over the substratum small sections of the pedal base become torn and are left behind. These small pieces of tissue then quickly form into miniature versions of the mother polyp. Pedal laceration has been observed in CoraIlimorphus, Corynactis, Discosoma, Rhodactis, and Ricordea and most likely occurs in the other genera too. Pseudo-corynactis normally reproduces asexually via longitudinal fission but probably also employs pedal laceration, though this has not been reported.
